No class at Starbucks (Olympic & Sawtelle)

I walked into Starbucks and ordered the usual "medium Mild". I have to admit to asking for mild for hot coffee instead of the usual coffee as mild isn't overburned like the regular roast. No frills beyond "mild"

The reply from across the counter was "Grande Mild" to which I said "Yeah, a medium Mild." They can't handle that.

The guy then apologized that they didn't have "grande" cups and was it OK if he gave me a "venti". Large for the price of a medium? Sure. The guy behind me was thrilled at the option.

So I took my large coffee to get cream and sugar (I blame my mother for getting me hooked on "coffee regular" as she brought that to California from Brooklyn. This may be one of the reasons people accuse me of being from New York.

Back to Starbucks. When I opened the lid, it was half full. The guy gave me his estimate of a medium coffee in a large cup. How stingy is that?!? Coffee is cheap. This showed absolutely no class.

I'm going to Coffee Bean tomorrow!

Talking while Ordering

I stuck with Coffee Bean today. I was on the phone in the middle of a conversation I couldn't get out of. Do I wait outside, jonesing for a cup of coffee or do I go inside and talk while ordering. I have a headset which seems like it makes it OK, especially since it's wired and not a Borg bluetooth headset that makes people look like they're talking to themselves.

Yes, I went in. I talked less and more quietly until I could get out with my medium coffee.

Kelly on My Mind (Century City Mall)

We went to a movie at Century City Mall, er the Westfield Shoppingtown at Century City. There is a new "French bistro" (it's from Orange County... need I say more?) Actually, the food was pretty good. We'll go back. Of course, good food means I need coffee. Rushing out to catch a movie after dinner after works meant no coffee in the restaurant.

Good news. No, GREAT news. Kelly's is finally open. I got my decaf and made the movie on time.

Barbara Behind Me (Beverly Glen)

Yet again I was armed an ready with Julio. Did the barrista ask my name? Nope. But she did ask Barbara who was behind me. When they called Barbara a guy with a goatee showed up. Damn... beaten by Barbara!!!

The Search Continues (Westwood & Olympic)

The Santa Ana winds started blowing last week so it heated up here. In fact, it heated up enough to break out the iced coffee.

I can't find a Starbucks to ask me my name. Julio is still in reserve. Some day I'll find a Starbucks to terst out Julio.

I hope the winds keep up. At least I know there are 157 more Starbucks near me.

Almost Julio (National next to the office)

A barrista finally asked me my name. She didn't believe that my name was Julio (yes, pronouned the Spanish way and not the English way). She had told me that the new Maple Streussel Muffin was bomb and wasn't buying me as Julio. I thought about singing a few bars of Simon & Garfunkle but thought better of it.

In all of the excitement, someone took my wife's latte (my iced coffee had no Julio as it was delivered to me as I paid) and they had to make a new latte with no name on it.

Disappointment.

Laugh Factory (West Hollywood)

We went to the Laugh Factory last night. One of the comedians, Dov Davidoff, talked about how he order a medium coffee and how the response back is always say grande. While we couldn't get used to his delivery, we certainly respect him for his view on Starbucks' size naming convention.

His reponse: I'm only going to say "grande" to a Mexican pimp asking me how big I like titties!. How true.

Tully's Veinte

Tully's is a traitor to all that is good in the world of coffee.

I flew out of Burbank Airport this morning. Talk about convenience. Easy to get in and through security. Then I went for my coffee. Tully's. I thought it might be a nice change.

Veinte?!?

You got it... Tully's sizes with Tall, Grande and Veinte. No, I didn't misspell Veinte, Tully's took the Starbucks misnomer and changed the spelling.

My Order

I ordered a large coffee.
